Learning how to talk to God

Surrender Yourself to Him and You Will Receive What You’re Searching For

Well, surrendering is much easier said than done.

Especially for people who’ve been traumatized by angry men in their lives and were taught that God is just some angry man in the sky who wants you to worship Him and will smite you the moment you don’t do what He says.

As one of those traumatized people, I needed to hear a different message in order to reconcile with my Creator.

Thankfully, God knew that I needed to receive the message of Love that can only come from Jesus Christ before I was going to be able to address my own sinning.

As I mentioned in a previous blog, my sister had given me a Jesus Calling book and as I made my way through that devotional, I began to see that the “love” I had been experiencing (and giving, unfortunately) my entire existence (from friends, family, strangers I opened myself up to, etc.) was absolutely NOT love.

Once I learned how to start recognizing the love of Christ, I began to see in myself ways that I wasn’t acting out of love, but out of fear, anger, obligation, or spite.

This is not how I wanted to be.

So I kept reading, kept asking Jesus to show me what else I needed to change about myself.

He would show me something, then using counseling and my time with Him in the early mornings (eventually that time went from 5 minutes to up to “whenever it stopped”) to work on me and guide and mold me into what I always wanted to be:

Which it turns out, it was who He wanted me to be, too.

The Cost of Accepting the Love of Christ

The love of Jesus is free, but there is a cost to accept it.

Once you accept the Love of Christ, you aren’t forced to do anything - you WANT to change and do better because you see it is a better way.

So, the cost is you CHOOSE to lay down your feelings and ungodly desires in life.

I just didn’t know how to seek Him or listen for Him and even when I did hear Him, I was so caught up in my own trauma, drama, and mindset that I didn’t know how to learn to be different.

Self-Improvement

But at a certain point in our lives, we become responsible for reconciling what happened to us when we were young.

Regardless of the person(s) that did the things to us, we must reconcile with God in order for our life to be on the right path.

People call it forgiveness or choosing to let it go.

I call it Reconciliation with God: truly laying it down with The Lord to where it no longer stirs up any kind of sin inside you.

(no trauma, no anger, no resentment, no spite, not even a course word)

And you must do it each time it comes up.

We are often invited to go back to our sinful ways so we must be actively reconciling with Christ in order to resist every invitation.

Actively Reconciling With Christ

When you’re actively reconciling and seeking God, you get real comfortable chatting with Him so often.

You begin to learn He isn’t going to punish you for making a mistake.

He wants a good life for you, filled with love, joy, and peace.

You can talk to Him however you need to - He can take it.

And He would rather you talk to Him than anyone else because He knows all circumstances of every situation.

While others may be able to help, they will never know as much about a situation as God, so they cannot offer perfect advice, therefore leaving Him to be the perfect mentor, guide, father.

He cares for you and your thoughts and feelings are important to Him.

Response Instead of Reaction

Once you begin actively reconciling with Christ everyday, you begin to see the world differently.

It’s still the same world; the same things are still happening; but they don’t affect you the same way and you begin responding (or not) instead of reacting to life and its circumstances.

Response is always preferred over reaction.

How do we be intentional about responding instead of reacting?

I’m so glad you asked:

STOP.

Pause.

Take in the information that was just presented.

Allow yourself the pause to check in with God - especially if any negative feelings are coming up.

Feelings are just notifications to check in with God.

Once you’ve checked in regarding feelings, ask the Lord, SHOULD I respond?

Sometimes a response is needed; sometimes it is not.

If the Lord tells you to respond, ask Him for the appropriate words, tone, temperament and timing.

He will provide all of these things when the time is right for you to respond.

James 1:19 - Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.

Living a Godly Life

To respond in a Godly way or to live a Godly life is not a matter of forcing yourself to be a fake positive all the time or a determined positive.

It is a matter of when you are falling into an old mindset that is inviting you to sin, you must first check in with God so He can “cleanse” you and calm your spirit.

He will place you in the correct mindset every single time you ask Him to, should you find you’re straying or feeling some kind of way.

Surrender yourself to Him by calling out “God, I need you” and you will receive what you’re asking.

Co-Regulating With God

I call it “co-regulating with God”.

I know a lot of people rely on calling up friends in the midst of a crisis and when the friends are needed and can help, it’s amazing to have friends to be able to call on! Recovery programs also teach us to reach out and call a sponsor - but what happens when it’s something the friends can’t physically help with or there is no one to call on?

Then we are left with what can always be our perfect first option: Taking it to the Lord.

Again - He will always know the perfect solution to every circumstance.

(even if it doesn’t look perfect to us at the time)
